Rose Piper &
Winfred Rembert:
A Pair of Opposites

August 16, 2002 - September 29, 2002

About the Show

The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art will exhibit the works of two important African-American artists from August 16 through September 29, 2002.

Rose Piper, born in 1917, lives in New York and has had a long and noted career as an artist. She majored in art at Hunter College in New York City and continued her studies at The Art Students League also in the city. After the war, she spent a further year of studies in Paris from 1947-48. Ms. Piper had gained national critical attention with her first solo exhibition in 1947 at the Roko Gallery in New York. A year later, she won first prize at the “Seventh Annual Exhibition of Negro Art” sponsored by Atlanta University. Ms. Piper has been recognized as one of the earliest African-American abstract painters from the 1940s. This exhibit will include some of her early abstract work, as well as, her later, realist allegories.

Winfred Rembert, born in Cuthbert, Georgia in 1945, is a self-taught artist who only began to paint on leather in 1997. Presently living in New Haven, Connecticut, Mr. Rembert was encouraged by his wife to paint his memories of the Deep South of the 1950s. Raised by his great-aunt Lillian Rembert, he was working in the fields as a child picking cotton, chopping potato vines, and “shaking” peanuts. There was an incident that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement in 1967 that led to his arrest. He was sentenced to 27 years and served seven on a chain gang before his sentence was commuted. His paintings commemorate these experiences and also depict the local characters in his hometown of Cuthbert. Mr. Rembert first exhibited these works at Yale University Art Gallery and received very favorable reviews in the New York Times.

The works of Rose Piper and Winfred Rembert are courtesy of M. Lee Stone Fine Prints, San Jose, CA. There will be a public reception in the gallery for this exhibition on Friday, August 23, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. While the artists will not be able to attend, Mr. Stone will be there.
